The research
Your custom project begins with a phone call or a Facetime, so that I can learn as much as possible about the adventure you want captured and what it means to you, or the person you are gifting it to. I will then research additional details about the location or the sport, while drawing from my own knowledge and experience from a life of outdoor adventures.
Selecting the right wood
I work with local businesses for unique, kiln dried, live-edge wood with special attention paid to custom pieces like yours. Sizing cuts and sanding are done in my workshop to ensure it meets all my strict requirements. Once I know what the art will be, I search through the appropriate wood options making sure that the best grain and bark is chosen so that it becomes part of your story that I am capturing.
Composing the artwork
I start your custom piece with paper and pencil. I choose to work through the iterations on paper before going to wood. Drawing directly on wood and erasing leaves impurities that become visible once coated during the finishing process.
Wood burning
Once the composition and artwork is finalized, the wood burning of your special piece begins. Wood burning tools are like paint brushes, it takes more than one type to create the best art. Approximately 8-12 of the 50 burning pens I own are used on one art piece depending on detail and burning requirements. Over 2,000 memorable stories have been burned to date and every piece is a new adventure.
The finishing touches
Inscriptions give a piece the truly personal touch. A quote that resonates with the individual and the art burned into the back is the forever statement expressing the power of the relationship and the adventure.
The art, equipped with a hanger already installed means the memory on nature’s canvas is ready to hang upon arrival.
Getting the piece to you
Your nature’s canvas memory can be picked up if you’re in the Hamilton, Ontario area. It can also be shipped as a gift worldwide to its forever home to bring smiles for years to come.
